Augustus: The First Emperor
Gaius Octavius — later Augustus — transformed Rome from a dying republic into the greatest empire the world had ever known. His reign inaugurated the Pax Romana, two centuries of relative peace and prosperity.
From Octavian to Augustus
Adopted by Julius Caesar in his will, the young Octavian fought a brutal civil war against Mark Antony and Cleopatra. His victory at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC made him the undisputed master of the Roman world. In 27 BC, the Senate granted him the title Augustus — "the revered one."
This Denarius
This silver denarius shows the refined portrait of Augustus in his later years. The careful, idealized features reflect the Augustan propaganda machine — presenting the emperor as eternally youthful, wise, and divinely favored.
