Barcid Bronze — Iberian Mint
From Hannibal's Spain — possibly depicting the great general himself
Unique piece
The Barcid Dynasty in Spain
After losing the First Punic War, Carthage turned to Spain to rebuild its power. Hamilcar Barca, his son-in-law Hasdrubal, and his son Hannibal established a Carthaginian empire in Iberia, founding Carthago Nova (modern Cartagena) as their capital.
This Coin
This bronze coin from the Barcid mints in Spain shows a male head on the obverse — scholars debate whether this represents Melqart (the Carthaginian Heracles), Hannibal himself, or his father Hamilcar. The reverse shows a horse with palm tree, the quintessential Carthaginian motif. Whatever the identity of the portrait, this coin was part of the military machine that produced history's most audacious campaign.
