Claudius: The Unlikely Emperor
Tiberius Claudius Drusus was the last man anyone expected to become emperor. Afflicted with a limp and a stammer, he was dismissed by his family as a fool — which may have saved his life through the murderous reigns of Tiberius and Caligula. When the Praetorian Guard found him hiding behind a curtain after Caligula's assassination, they proclaimed him emperor.
This Coin
This bronze as features the famous reverse type of Minerva advancing right, hurling a javelin and holding a shield. Claudius's coins are remarkably common — his mint at Rome produced enormous quantities — making them an accessible entry point for collectors of the Twelve Caesars. The obverse portrait shows Claudius's distinctive features: a large head, prominent ears, and determined expression.
