Galba: The Old Soldier
Servius Sulpicius Galba became emperor at age 72 after Nero's suicide in 68 AD, inaugurating the chaotic "Year of Four Emperors." A stern, old-fashioned aristocrat, Galba's refusal to pay the Praetorian Guard's expected donative proved fatal — he was murdered after just seven months on the throne.
This Coin
Galba's coins are among the rarest and most sought-after in the Twelve Caesars series, given his brief reign. This denarius shows his aged, stern portrait — perhaps the most realistic and unflattering of any Roman imperial coin. The reverse depicts Livia standing, holding a patera and scepter, linking Galba's legitimacy to the Julio-Claudian dynasty he replaced.
