Justinian I Bronze Follis
The emperor who rebuilt the Roman Empire and codified Roman law
Unique piece
Justinian the Great
Justinian I (527–565 AD) is the most celebrated Byzantine emperor. He reconquered North Africa, Italy, and southern Spain; commissioned the Hagia Sophia — the greatest church in Christendom for a thousand years; and codified Roman law into the Corpus Juris Civilis, which remains the foundation of civil law in much of Europe today.
This Coin
This large bronze follis (40 nummi) is instantly recognizable: the obverse shows Justinian facing, wearing a diadem and holding a cross on a globe. The reverse bears a large letter M (= 40 nummi), the denomination mark. These chunky, visually striking coins are among the most affordable ancient coins available.
