Ionia / Lydia · 650–600 BC
Ionian Electrum 1/48 Stater
One of the very first coins ever made — the dawn of money itself
Unique piece
The Dawn of Money
This tiny coin — barely 6mm across — represents one of the most revolutionary inventions in human history: coinage. Struck in western Anatolia (modern Turkey) around 650–600 BC, it is among the earliest coins ever made.
Electrum: Nature's Alloy
The first coins were made from electrum, a natural alloy of gold and silver found in the River Pactolus. Ancient sources attributed the invention to the Lydians, though Ionian Greek cities may have been equally early adopters. This fraction — 1/48 of a full stater — was small change in the world's first monetary economy.
Despite its diminutive size, this coin carries the weight of a civilizational breakthrough. Before coinage, trade relied on barter and weighed metal. With standardized coins, commerce became faster, trust became portable, and the modern economy was born.
