Otho Silver Denarius
The vain emperor who reigned for 91 days
Unique piece
Otho: The Briefest Caesar
Marcus Salvius Otho seized the throne by engineering Galba's assassination in January 69 AD. A former companion of Nero known for his vanity, Otho ruled for just 91 days before his defeat by Vitellius's legions at the Battle of Bedriacum. Rather than flee, Otho committed suicide — the only noble act ancient sources attribute to him.
This Coin
Otho's denarii are the rarest of the Twelve Caesars series, produced only during his three-month reign. The portrait is notably flattering — ancient sources say Otho wore a wig and shaved his body — showing an idealized, almost feminine face. These coins command a premium among collectors precisely because of their extreme rarity and the drama of his brief, tragic reign.
