Philip II Eight Reales
The famous "piece of eight" — the first truly global currency
Unique piece
The Coin That Connected Two Worlds
The real de a ocho — the "piece of eight" of pirate legend — was the first global currency in human history. Minted from American silver, it connected Spain, the Americas, and Asia in a web of commerce that reshaped the world.
Silver from the New World
After the Spanish conquest, vast silver deposits were discovered in Mexico and Potosí (modern Bolivia). The mines of Potosí alone produced enough silver to build a bridge from South America to Spain — or so the legend goes. This silver was minted into coins that funded the Spanish Empire's global ambitions.
Philip II and the Empire
Philip II of Spain (1556–1598) presided over the world's first empire "on which the sun never set." His eight reales coins circulated from Manila to Mexico City, from Antwerp to the Andes. They were the preferred currency of international trade for three centuries.
A Lasting Legacy
The design of the Spanish real de a ocho influenced currencies worldwide. The United States dollar, the Chinese yuan, and the Japanese yen all trace their origins to this coin. The "$" symbol itself may derive from the Pillars of Hercules depicted on Spanish colonial coins.
