Trajan Silver Denarius
The optimus princeps — Rome at its greatest territorial extent
Unique piece
Trajan: The Best Emperor
Marcus Ulpius Traianus — known to history as Trajan — earned the title Optimus Princeps (the best ruler) from the Roman Senate. Under his leadership, the Roman Empire reached its maximum territorial extent, stretching from Scotland to Mesopotamia.
The Dacian Wars
Trajan's most celebrated campaigns were the Dacian Wars (101–106 AD), which conquered the kingdom of Dacia (modern Romania). The spoils from these wars were enormous — enough gold and silver to fund a massive building program in Rome, including Trajan's famous column and forum.
This Denarius
This silver denarius was struck at the height of Roman power. The detailed portrait shows Trajan's strong, determined features — the face of a soldier-emperor who led from the front. Minted from the vast silver reserves flowing into Rome from conquered territories, it represents an empire at its zenith.
