Umayyad Silver Dirham — Wasit Mint
Pure epigraphy — no images, only the word of God in silver
Unique piece
The Umayyad Revolution in Coinage
In 696–697 AD, Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan introduced a revolutionary coinage reform: all figurative imagery was removed from Islamic coins, replaced entirely by Arabic inscriptions — Quranic verses and declarations of faith. This was one of the most radical changes in monetary history.
This Coin
This silver dirham from the Wasit mint (in modern Iraq) bears the Shahada on the obverse ("There is no god but God alone, He has no partner") and Quranic verse 9:33 on the reverse. The mint name and date are inscribed in the margins. Wasit was one of the most prolific Umayyad mints, producing enormous quantities of standardized silver dirhams that circulated from Spain to Central Asia.
