Vespasian: The Builder of the Colosseum
Titus Flavius Vespasianus was an unlikely emperor — a middle-class soldier from the Italian countryside who rose through military merit. After the chaos of 69 AD, Vespasian restored stability, rebuilt the treasury, and began construction of the Flavian Amphitheatre — the Colosseum — on the site of Nero's private lake.
This Coin
Vespasian's denarii are among the most affordable of the Twelve Caesars, thanks to the enormous output of his mint. His portrait is notably realistic — a broad, lined face with a slightly amused expression. The famous "Judaea Capta" reverse types, commemorating his conquest of Jerusalem in 70 AD, are particularly sought after by collectors.
