Alexander: Conqueror of the Known World

Alexander III of Macedon — known to history as Alexander the Great — created the largest empire the ancient world had ever seen, all before his death at age 32. His coins traveled even further than his armies.

The Coins of Conquest

Alexander's silver drachms and tetradrachms were minted in enormous quantities at mints across his empire — from Macedonia to Egypt, from Babylon to the borders of India. They featured a standardized design: the head of Heracles (Hercules) wearing a lion-skin headdress on the obverse, and Zeus seated on a throne on the reverse.

Legacy in Silver

This drachm is a direct connection to one of history's most extraordinary figures. It was likely minted to pay soldiers, fund supplies, or celebrate a victory. The Attic weight standard Alexander adopted ensured these coins were accepted from Greece to Central Asia.

After Alexander

Following his death in 323 BC, Alexander's empire fractured among his generals — the Diadochi. But his coins continued to be minted and imitated for centuries, becoming the standard currency of the Hellenistic world.
