Venetian Silver Grosso
The Doge kneeling before St. Mark — Venice's iconic design
Unique piece
The Grosso: Venice's Silver Standard
The silver grosso (or matapan) was introduced by Doge Enrico Dandolo in 1202 — the same year Venice diverted the Fourth Crusade to sack Constantinople. For over two centuries, the grosso was the dominant trade coin of the eastern Mediterranean.
This Coin
The obverse shows the Doge (identified by name in the legend) kneeling to receive a banner from St. Mark, patron saint of Venice. The reverse depicts Christ enthroned, surrounded by stars. This elegant design — unchanged for centuries — became one of the most recognized and trusted images in medieval commerce.
