Venetian Soldino
The coin that gave us the word "soldier" — Venice's everyday silver
Unique piece
The Soldino: Origin of "Soldier"
The word "soldier" derives from the Latin solidus (and Italian soldo) — literally, "one who is paid." The Venetian soldino was the daily-wage coin that gave us this word. Introduced in the 14th century, it served as the backbone of everyday commerce in Venice.
This Coin
The obverse shows the Doge kneeling, holding a banner, with his name in the surrounding legend. The reverse depicts the winged lion of St. Mark — nimbate and facing — one of the most enduring civic symbols in European history. These small silver coins are charming, historically significant, and affordable.
